From 9 September 2024, there will no longer be a doctor's fee in England and Wales when arranging a funeral. This is because from this date, all deaths in England and Wales will be independently viewed, either by a relevant coroner or by a Medical Examiner and the cost will be met by the NHS.
A Medical Examiner is a specifically trained independent senior doctor who will scrutinise all deaths across a local area that do not fall under the coroner's jurisdiction. By providing a greater level of scrutiny over the cause of deaths; it is hoped that the introduction of Medical Examiners will make it less likely that unnatural causes of death will go unnoticed; that the number of deaths unnecessarily referred to the coroner will be reduced and that national data about causes of death will be captured with greater accuracy.
Medical Examiners, or Medical Examiner Officers, will also be available to meet with families, or their representatives, if they wish to discuss the cause of death.
My father died after a few weeks of illness and I was quite unprepared to discuss funerals which he'd left me to plan when he died quite quickly in a nursing home. Due to the circumstances I had to choose a funeral home to collect him quite quickly, and after a Google search we chose Gordon Barber and dealt with Mark. Mark gave exceptional service from the first call and collection of dad, through to the collection of his ashes and at all points in between. All options were discussed and questions answered without me ever feeling rushed. Paperwork and final collection (we chose unattended cremation and collected ashes from the funeral home) were done with kindness and dignity and made the whole situation as best as possible under difficult circumstances. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Mark and team to anyone having to plan a funeral.
The support, help and friendliness was first class in what was obviously a difficult time for my family. We were guided through the process with great care. Individual acts of kindness from the staff meant an awful lot.
Provided a deeply professional and dignified service. After the recent passing of a dear family member, we were keen to get all the necessary procedure and paperwork done for the funeral. The staff at Gordon Barber kindly took care of many things, explaining clearly step by step. They worked very well with our local community members so we could fulfill our religious obligations in a respectful manner. I'm very grateful and would recommend others to consider their services too.
I have only praise for the dignified and sensitive way in which Christine greeted me on our first appointment at Gordon Barber's. I was able to see my wife Patricia resting in peace and say goodbye properly. I was then given time to collect myself before discussing funeral details. Christine kept me up to date with every step of that painful journey, and I am grateful to her and other members of staff for their sensitively understated support.
Had gordon barber do my dads funeral today they done a fantastic job as for mark wot a gent couldnt do enough for our family cant thank him enough very pleased from the reynolds family x
